Mobile Phone Use on Airport Aprons

Dear Community,
Today, I'd like to address an important topic concerning the use of mobile phones on airport ramps. My aim isn't to complain but rather to share valuable insights based on my experience working across various airports in Australia, many of which serve as gateways to mining sites.
You may have encountered airport personnel advising against mobile phone use as you transit from the terminal to your aircraft. Ever paused to consider why such a policy exists? The rationale is somewhat akin to the reasons behind the prohibition of mobile phone use while driving—it represents a significant distraction.
Despite the vigilant presence of airport staff on the apron, it remains a zone fraught with potential hazards. Vigilance for one's safety, as well as the safety of others, is paramount. Engaging with your phone—be it texting, calling, selecting music, or recording—inevitably compromises your situational awareness.
When airport staff request you to pocket your phone, it's not about exerting authority but prioritising safety. As a gesture of cooperation and respect, I encourage you to stow your phone during this critical phase of your journey. Rest assured, there will be ample opportunity to catch up on phone activities once you're securely through the gates or comfortably seated on the aircraft.
Adherence to this policy is not only a mark of respect for airport regulations but also an act of care for your well-being and that of your fellow travellers. Let's collectively uphold this practice to ensure a safer environment for everyone involved.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
