WRITING A COVER LETTER
What exactly is the purpose of a cover letter, and do I need to include one?
While your CV outlines your professional history and key information, a cover letter is your opportunity to expand on and highlight anything that will help compliment your application. It serves as your introduction to potential employers, showcasing your suitability and enthusiasm, your understanding of the role requirements, and ability to communicate effectively.
Always include a cover letter
Where a job advertisement specifically requests, or gives you the opportunity to attach a cover letter, you should always include one! If you’re applying for a role you’re particularly interested in, has a lot of competition, or is mid to senior level, a cover letter is a must.
Research the company
Before you start writing your cover letter, take the time to research the company you're applying to. Familiarise yourself with their mission, values, and recent projects. This will allow you to tailor your letter to their specific needs and requirements, matching their professional expectations and aligning yourself with their corporate style.
Customise your cover letter for each application
Avoid using a generic cover letter for multiple job applications. Take the time to customise each letter to the specific job and company you're applying to, which will communicate your genuine interest in the position and that you've put effort into your application.
Basic cover letter paragraph structure
Address the Hiring Manager
Whenever possible, address your cover letter to a specific person rather than using a generic salutation. Add a personal touch by taking the time to find out who will be reviewing your application. If the job posting doesn't mention a specific name, do some research on LinkedIn or the company's website to find the appropriate contact, or give the recruiter a call to ask to whom you can address your cover letter.
Start with a strong opening
Your opening paragraph should grab the reader's attention and clearly state the position you're applying for. Affirm your suitability and enthusiasm for the role. Be concise and avoid generic statements that could apply to any job application.
Showcase your skills, experience and knowledge of the industry
Use the body of your cover letter to highlight your key skills and experiences that make you a strong candidate for the job. Focus on the qualifications and requirements listed in the job posting, and provide specific examples of how your skills align with those needs. Use metrics and numbers whenever possible to quantify your achievements.
In the mining industry, it's essential to show that you understand the unique challenges and opportunities it presents. Discuss any relevant industry experience or certifications you have acquired and explain how they make you a valuable asset to the company.
Convince the recruiter to select you next!
End your cover letter by reiterating your interest in the position and expressing your eagerness to discuss your qualifications further. Thank the hiring manager for considering your application and provide your contact information for their convenience.
Want to level up your cover letter? Thinking of a word but it’s stuck on the tip of your tongue? Use google to replace a common word with something a little more special. E.g. search “review synonym” to come up with alternatives such as analyse, evaluate, inspect.
