BASIC CV OUTLINE

You can use the below sections as a basic guide for building your CV

Professional summary

Including a professional summary could set you apart, if done correctly. Take care to be succinct, three to five sentences maximum, summarising your experience and qualifications relevant to the role. Highlight any major achievements, and your interest or passion for the industry, company and/or role.

Personal details

  • Name: First and last name

  • Mobile phone number: Add your time zone if you’re applying to companies interstate, e.g. 0412 345 678 (AEST)

  • Email address: Use a personal email and not a company email address. Emails like mikedawson85@email.com or michael_hdmechanicperth@email.com are okay, but avoid things like supercoolguyskatesalot@email.com. Create a new email account if you need to.

  • Location: Current city/region and state, e.g. Hunter Valley, NSW or Hobart, Tasmania. Don’t include your residential/street address.

  • LinkedIn: Hyperlink to your profile.

Employment: For each role you have worked, include in a basic format similar to the below:

  • Company Name
    Role title, start date - current
    Overview of main responsibilities and achievements.

  • Company Name
    Role title, start date - finish date
    Overview of main responsibilities and achievements.

Education/Qualifications: Include relevant studies, with the most recent first, for example:

  • University of Australia
    Degree title, Major, graduated year

  • Registered Training Organisation
    Certificate title, completion month/year

Tickets/Licences: Include any industry relevant tickets/licenses, listed with the type, and date obtained/expired as applicable. For example:

  • License type, State, expiry date

  • Working at heights, obtained date

  • National Police Clearance, obtained date

Skills summary: Bullet list demonstrable skills, strengths, software/programs and competency level, and soft skills, relevant to the responsibilities listed in the job advertisement. For example:

  • Project management

  • Microsoft 365, advanced

  • Stakeholder engagement, relationship development

References: These aren’t necessarily compulsory. You can detail “references upon request”, or provide contact information if you wish, such as:

  • Firstname Surname
    Manager Department, Company (2019 - present)
    Phone: 0412 345 678

  • Firstname Surname
    Masters Supervisor, University (2023)
    Phone: 0411 222 333
